American Airlines (AAL) trades at about $12.97, roughly 29% below its 52-week high after falling about 21.8% over the past month. Over the trailing twelve months it returned -3.5% while the S&P 500 returned 21.1%. In July it reported record quarterly revenue.

Large-cap stocks have the power to shape entire industries thanks to their size and widespread influence. With such vast footprints, however, finding new areas for growth is much harder than for smaller, more agile players.
